King Arthur: Knight’s Tale: Preview

A few days ago, a fundraising campaign for the just announced King Arthur: Knight’s Tale, new game from the studio NeocoreGames, authors The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing And Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr. We contacted the developers, and they shared with us the first details about the game.

The past is not forgotten

Hungarians from NeocoreGames became famous (or rather, became famous) thanks to two parts King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame (the first came out in 2009, the second three years later). It was a very tasty and unique cocktail.. Total War And Heroes of Might and Magic, seasoned with its own “tricks” such as the beliefs of the characters who made difficult decisions. That is, here long before Total War: Warhammer people, horses, archers, swordsmen, vampires, ogres and dragons mixed together. Plus magic, of course.

The games were cool, I hung out in them for days (especially the first one), and then the Hungarians released an action/RPG The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing – a very inventive and fascinating “diaboloid”, which even included elements of tower defense into the usual fetishes of the genre. And another action/RPG released two years ago – Warhammer 40,000: Inquisitor – Martyr after the expansion release Prophecy left me and many others with positive impressions.

In general, Neocore good reputation. And now they are returning, one might say, to the origins – to the legends and myths about King Arthur. As he told me Gergo Vas (Gergo Vas), studio PR manager, after Martyr the developers wanted to do something just as dark and gothic, but in a different setting. And the world of “Arthurian” legends they once created was ideal for this. That is, we can say that King Arthur: Knight’s Tale – this is a darker version The Role-Playing Wargame.

Here, too, there will be a “totalvar” mix of strategy on a global map and battles on rough terrain. True, this time the battles are more local, tactical and turn-based, and in addition, the currently fashionable “bagel” elements will appear.

Choose with your heart! Or your head

Ironically, in King Arthur: Knight’s Tale we will play as Sir Mordred, the illegitimate son, traitor and murderer of King Arthur. As you know, in the final battle they both finished each other off. And the king’s body was sent to the island, where he, apparently, turned into a monster. Therefore, the Lady of the Lake, ruler of the mystical island of Avalon, brought us back to put an end to the real nightmare that began after what happened to Arthur. And for this it is necessary that Mordred finish what he started – kill the king or what he turned into on the island.

This, as you already understand, is precisely dark fantasy in the spirit of adult, serious works of “Arthuriana”, and not its versions for children and youth. Mordred needs to restore Camelot and rebuild the fortress. Moreover, each choice, as the authors assure, will be difficult and have its own consequences, including for the plot:

The narrative will adapt to these changes and move forward, so characters, control options, resources, magic items may change with each new playthrough.

In addition, the consequences of our actions will be reflected on the Moral Chart, showing what advantages or penalties they give – in this sense, the authors transfer their own system from King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame.

In total, 20 story missions are planned, many side quests and five dozen random events, during which we will also have to mostly make “hard decisions”. At the same time, Mordred will interact with seven different factions – there will obviously also be a difficult choice, who is our enemy and who is our friend.

Fidelity Strategy

If we talk about the strategic part, then we will have to deal with city management, concentrating on expanding and strengthening the fortress and castle.

In answer to my question, to what extent is the strategy Knight’s Tale will be similar to what we saw in The Role-Playing Wargame, Gergo Vas answered like this:

It’s safe to say that the new game is even more about heroes. Knight’s Tale won’t be a big strategy game where you command hundreds of units, it will focus on characters and turn-based tactical gameplay. The kingdom management system is built around rebuilding your fortress, managing events, exploring "points of interest" on the adventure map, and making moral decisions.

That is, as you understand, the main resource in King Arthur: Knight’s Tale will become the heroes themselves, the knights of the Round Table, whom Mordred hires and attracts to carry out his tasks. They will develop and upgrade, like in classic RPGs, take into account our decisions and react to them.

And here we need to talk in more detail about the system of morality and loyalty. According to Gergo Vasa, the first is displayed by a diagram divided into four branches along which we move depending on our actions. This affects the ability to unlock new heroes and what global buffs we will or will not receive.

On the other hand, each knight has a fealty (or loyalty) parameter, which shows how the relationship between him and Mordred as ruler develops. And they, these relationships, can change greatly during the passage, and it is possible that some heroes, if they don’t like something, will even go against the player.

“Certain combinations of your decisions can lead to quarrels with any hero, because they are all strong, independent individuals. Under special circumstances, these decisions can also unlock new storylines or unique heroes,” says Gergo Vas.

Hot ten

Finally, about turn-based battles. Here everything is expected more or less according to the classics, but according to quite advanced classics. Heroes of five different classes walk and hit in turns, using cover, heights and other terrain features. That is, correct tactical movement and positioning is the key to success.

You can and should also set traps, lure enemies into them, use artifacts and unique class abilities. And it’s also important to study your opponents, groping for their strengths and weaknesses. Especially in battles with bosses, of which there will be exactly ten.

This is also important because the game will have a permanent death rule – fallen heroes will disappear forever. This means that wounded, injured, cursed and sick knights need to be patched and treated – this will take some time.

Overall, everything looks promising. Moreover, considering that the developers promise “endgame”, that is, they are going to support and develop the project. One could, of course, be skeptical about the fact that all these promises, especially about nonlinearity, are repeated like parrots by almost all developers. But the Hungarians are from NeocoreGames they have already successfully implemented all this once, and I have no reason not to believe them. The main question: how much will the results of the Kickstarter campaign influence the fate of development?? In any case, the authors confidently say that closed “beta” King Arthur: Knight’s Tale starts in November, and the release (Steam first, other platforms later) is planned for the first quarter of 2021.
